My life as a Flockstar

Prologue

I love being on the forefront of technology, especially when it comes to the web. I tried embracing the Flockstar lifestyle for several months. I was happy for a long time but it started to to take its toll.

Upbeats

Flock is heading in the right direction. The built in photo uploader and viewer was extremely handy. I no longer had to load photos through the Flickr uploader, go to the Flickr page for that photo and get the HTML code for it. I could upload right in the browser and drag and drop the photos (with various size choices) into any comments section in Blogs, Flickr, Forums, Emails, you name it. It also works with Photobucket.

The bookmarking feature is another plus for Flock. It allowed me to use me del.icio.us account for all my bookmarking. On top of that it would sync my bookmarks between all my computers. I will wonder if they will add ma.gnolia support (it does have support for Shadows).

The built in blog tool was very basic but was great for making quick posts. You could use the snippets feature to copy and paste itmes from other webpages into your post (as well as use the photo tool). Quite handy.

Beatdowns

Snippets was nice enough but I already used Google Notebook. Google Notebook’s data is kept online of so you can access it anywhere unlike Snippets. Close but no cigar.

The News service (RSS Aggregator) was a nice attempt in keeping your RSS under control. Too bad it couldn’t handle the amount of feeds I had in there (over 200). It ran extremely sluggish and would freeze Flock up on occassion. After the first day of use I went straight back to using Google Reader (which is better with the new interafce).

The end of an era (a very short one)

After a few months use I had to let go. It seemed to be running slower and slower and was no longer worth it. I’ll give it another go once it hits version 1.0 (Remember, the browser is still in it’s infancy stage). Once they work out the kinks I think Flock will be a fine browser.

  1. I wanted to show you my new Mirrormask icon, but now I can’t =(

  2. [...] I posted about Flock before. It’s a Firefox based web browser that is centered around the social web. My evaluation of the release of Flock I was using previously (I’ll have to check the version) was mediocre. I felt they were heading in the right direction but they weren’t quite there yet. From what I read last night on Download Squad it looks like they’ve made vast improvements and here I am testing it out again (I making this post in Flock). Here are a list of features from Download Squad’s post: My World: Flock tells you when your friends have new photos and videos and when you have new feeds. My World gives quick access to your recently visited favorite sites as well. Account Detection: Informs you when there are available feeds and media streams on a page and when your account log-in can be configured with Flock. [...]
